Children’s Privacy (COPPA)

This page explains how DAILE Learning Inc. handles information from children under 13 under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). It is a summary of our practices for parents, schools, and guardians. It is not a substitute for our Privacy Policy or, for New York schools, a signed Education Law §2-d contract.

1. What COPPA Is

COPPA is a U.S. federal law. It gives parents control over personal information that commercial websites and apps collect from children under 13.

DAILE is a K–5 learning product, so we treat student users as children under 13. Email addresses, names, and similar identifiers are personal information under COPPA.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) updated the COPPA Rule in 2025. Those updates tighten notice, retention, and advertising rules. They did not change the FTC’s existing guidance that a school may consent on a parent’s behalf when an educational service is used only for school-authorized learning and not for marketing.

2. What We Collect From Children

We collect only what is needed to run lessons and show progress to the school.

  • Email address, used as the student’s sign-in username
  • First name, last name, or display name, when the school provides them
  • Grade level (kindergarten through fifth)
  • Optional school student ID, if the school includes it on a roster
  • Lesson activity: which lessons were started or finished, answers, scores, and time spent

We do not collect Social Security numbers, government IDs, biometric identifiers, home addresses, or dates of birth from students.

We do not sell student information or use it for advertising, behavioral targeting, or commercial profiling.

3. School Edition vs Home Edition

School Edition

When a school or district adopts DAILE for classroom use:

  • The school (not the child) creates student accounts by invite. Students cannot open a public sign-up form.
  • Under FTC guidance, the school may consent as the parent’s agent only for school-authorized educational purposes.
  • We provide this COPPA notice so the school can decide whether those practices are appropriate and can inform parents.
  • Student data is not used for marketing or to build commercial profiles.
Home Edition

Home Edition is not generally available. If we offer it, a parent or guardian must consent before we collect a child’s personal information. That consent flow is not built in the product today. If we learn we collected a child’s information without the required consent, we delete it as soon as we reasonably can, unless a law requires us to keep it.

4. How We Use Children’s Information

  • Deliver grade-appropriate lessons
  • Let teachers and school admins see progress and assignment status
  • Operate, secure, and improve the educational service
  • Send account emails needed to set a password and sign in

We do not use children’s personal information to train general-purpose artificial intelligence models or for targeted advertising.

5. Who We Share It With

We share children’s information only with service providers that run the product (hosting, database, and transactional email) and with the child’s school. Those providers may use the information only to provide the service.

We do not disclose children’s information to third parties for advertising or for any purpose that is not integral to the educational service.

If a school later connects a rostering partner such as Clever or ClassLink, that partner is a service provider for rostering only. We would ingest only the fields needed to create accounts and classes.

6. Parent Rights

Parents and guardians may:

  • Review the types of personal information we have collected from their child
  • Request that we delete it, subject to the school’s contract and records laws
  • Refuse further collection or use (which may mean the child can no longer use DAILE)

7. How Long We Keep It

We keep student information only as long as needed to provide the educational service or as required by the school’s contract or law. When a school asks us to delete data, or when a contract ends, we delete student data within 60 days and confirm in writing.

8. Security

We use encryption in transit (TLS) and encryption at rest for data stored in our database. Student accounts are invite-only. Passwords are hashed. Temporary invite PINs are hashed in our database and expire. DAILE staff use multi-factor authentication to access GitHub, Vercel, and Supabase dashboards. Students are not asked for a second factor.
